Living in New England for the last ten years there is one thing that I miss the most about being in my home state of Texas…the sunshine. I love the sunshine! Yes, it does get a bit warmer than most people would like in Texas, but I love the heat. Yet, there is so much more to my love of sunshine than just the warmth it brings.

Sunshine can brighten up any day, whether it is grey outside or you’re feeling grey on the inside. Taking time to go outside and bask in the sunshine can brighten any mother’s spirit! The fresh air and sunshine can make all the difference in the world and turn a bad day around!

God made the sun to rule by day, He knew that we needed to be in the light. Living all of our lives indoors is not what God planned for us, He planned for us to spend time outside enjoying and taking care of the world that He created for us to live in! The sunshine allows us to see everything that God created and live in awe of His splendor!

As homeschool moms, we need to be diligent and ensure that both we and our children do not spend all day inside completing our homeschooling. We need to take advantage of the sunny days! Grab a backpack, stuff it full of books and head outside together! While our children get their schoolwork done, we can read, write or enjoy laying in the sunshine!

By spending time out in the sun, we will find that our moods are lifted, our outlook on life is improved and our stress has diminished! The sunshine truly is good for a mother’s soul, mind and body!

Spending time in the sunshine helps give us gain Vitamin D, which our body needs! While it isn’t the best source, it definitely does help! I know that I don’t get enough of the vitamins that my body needs, so if spending time in the sunshine helps give me some then lets head outside!

If I told you that on every day that was sunny I headed outside, I would be lying. The truth is that I struggle with depression, but it is for that reason that I know how important it to spend as much time in the sunshine as possible! I encourage you to spend as much time as possible in the sunshine, it can change your life!

What do you love most about spending a day out in the sunshine?

Moms who homeschool are busy people. We have to make sure that each of our children are learning. We need to be students of our children so that we can meet them where they are at. We need to make lesson plans, cook nutritious meals, keep the house tidy, and be a good wife. In the midst of all of this busyness, homeschool moms are notorious for forgetting about one very important person. Themselves!

No matter what industry we’re in, people remind us that we must take care of our own needs if we are going to be able to care for the needs of others. When flying on a plane, we are told we need to put our own oxygen mask on first. Then, we can help to secure the masks of those around us.

It’s easy to forget about our own needs when we are focused on the needs of our families. When we neglect to take care of ourselves, we may find that our families will suffer as well.

Here are 6 Ways That We Ignore Ourselves:

1 – We Let Ourselves Get Tired – Parenting takes a lot of work! We need to be sure we’re taking care of our physical needs so that we will have the strength to make it through each day. Are you getting enough rest? Are you eating healthy meals? Are you drinking enough water? Are you exercising? If you are healthy then you will not only be able to survive but you will thrive!

2 – We Become Discouraged – We often become discouraged because we compare ourselves or our kids to those around us. God has all of us here for different reasons. When you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, it’s often because we are comparing our weaknesses to someone else’s strengths. Have a plan in place so that when you start to feel discouraged, you can do something to help snap yourself out of it. Some women enjoy relaxing in a hot bubble bath. Some want to go off alone with a good book. Some need to go on a drive with a glass of hot tea while listening to their favorite music. Write down several things that will help you to feel centered again and go to this list before you’re feeling drained.

3 – We Expect Perfection From Ourselves – Let’s face it. No one is perfect! No matter how hard you are trying to be the perfect mom, to give your child the perfect education, or to make perfect memories, you WILL fall short. Fortunately, God doesn’t expect us to be perfect. He knows that we will make mistakes. Stop putting so much pressure on yourself. Our kids will remember our attitudes much longer than they will remember details of what we’re doing with them. Lighten up!

4 – We Always Say “Yes”– There is so much pressure to perform in today’s society. And no matter where we go, please want us to commit to even more. Don’t cave in to the pressure. Before saying “yes” to something new, be sure to pray about it first. If it isn’t right for you and your family, you do have every right to say “no.”

5 – We Focus on our Failures – We all have strengths and weaknesses. I’m not sure why… but it’s all too easy to focus on what we’re doing wrong versus what we’re doing right. It’s also easy to focus on the hard things in this life versus the good things. Where is your focus?

6 – We Try to Have it All – No matter how hard you try, you aren’t going to be able to homeschool your kids, have a perfectly clean house, cook perfectly balanced meals, and be well groomed all at the same time. Your living room doesn’t need to look like a Pinterest Pin. Decide what’s important to you in life and work on those things. Learn to let go of the rest.

It’s all too easy to put a ton of pressure on ourselves… or to forget ourselves entirely in our quest to be excellent wives and mothers. As the holidays approach, and our lives get even busier remember what’s truly important in this life. Your sanity is important! Cherish the time you have with your family. Remember to take care of yourself, too. Your family will benefit when you are living a healthy, balanced life.

Question: Do you often forget to take care of yourself? Which of the above points do you need to work on the most? Have you learned any lessons in this area that you can share? Please leave a comment below.

The post Are You Ignoring this Important Person? first appeared on True Aim.

There are days that are filled with snuggles, hugs, kisses, smiles and laughter. My little blessings are the sunshine to my days and I love being a mom. It’s all I ever wanted to be.

Then there are days that are filled with tears, anger, disappointment, ugly words and hurt feelings. My little blessings sometimes mistake who I am. I am a mother, not a friend.

Being a mother is hard sometimes. We wish you could always have sunshiney days filled with having fun with our little blessings, but that isn’t always possible. Sometimes being a mom gets us labeled as mean. I often refer to myself as a mean mom, it doesn’t bother me. After all, I am a mother, not a friend.

Being a Mother Isn’t About Being a Friend

Our little blessings don’t understand the difficulty of being a mother. They don’t see that the choices we’re making are with their best interest in mind. They just want us to let them do what they want because they can’t see the outcomes that we can.

It’s important that we remember that we are called to be a mother not a friend.

The choices that we’ll make on our motherhood journey often won’t be popular. The explanations and reasons we offer will not be received well at times. Yet, just because our little blessings don’t like what they hear doesn’t mean that we give in and let them have their way.

Our little blessings need us to stay strong and be their mother. Even if they think they want a friend.

Being a mother isn’t always easy. There are times when it will seem like the most difficult job in the world. Sometimes we’ll wonder why we wanted to be a mother in the first place. After all, it isn’t as easy as it looked is it?

Decisions we never thought about having to make will show up each and every day and we can’t avoid them. Our little blessings will need directions and a mother needs to have the answers. A friend doesn’t offer direction or answers, they just go with the flow.

Someday the choices we made on our motherhood journey will be evident in the lives of our little blessings. If we’re prone to giving in, our little blessings will expect that throughout their lives from everyone. If we guide our little blessings as their mother not their friend, our little blessings will learn respect and they will be able to listen to authority throughout their lives.

Will our choices reveal that we were more concerned with being a friend to our little blessings or were we the mother that our little blessings needed, but didn’t want at the time?

The post A Mother Not a Friend first appeared on True Aim.

I can no longer concentrate on what the pastor is saying. And when my sons are tapping their pencil or making goofy noises in the car, it doesn’t take long for me to feel the hairs raising on the back of my neck and I have to ask them to stop.

And even worse, I’ve had times when my boys are goofing around and having a wonderful time laughing and carrying on and I feel myself getting upset with them. I’ve gotten upset when my boys are laughing?!? Yes, you read that right. Can you relate?

I recently read an article about something called misophonia. People with misophonia have specific sounds which cause them to feel an immediate negative reaction. These are sounds that are just background noise for most people – but when this person hears the sound they will have a response that can range from moderate discomfort to acute annoyance or even full-fledged rage and panic. Fight or flight reactions can occur.

These sounds can be things like chewing sounds, humming, tapping noises, or even BREATHING!

Boys and Noise

Why is it that boys tend to be the ones who make the noises and moms tend to be the ones who are irritated by them?

There are at least 6 Factors involved:

Females hear better – Women’s hearing is ten times better than that of men. This is a huge factor in causing boys to make noises that are irritating. They often don’t even realize that what they’re doing is making a noise!

Boys process differently – Our sons do things that don’t make any sense to us and that can be irritating. We sometimes have a hard time figuring them out!

Boys learn better while moving – Quite often, boys are kinesthetic learners. This means that they need to move their hands and feet in order to think more clearly. Pacing also helps to soothe them. All of this movement causes noise.

Lack of serotonin – Boys have more of a tendency to have less serotonin than their bodies need. This can cause them to be fidgety and to lack impulse control… which can be irritating to moms.

“Huh?!?” – Boys act like they hear us when they are actually thinking about something else. This causes moms to have to repeat themselves often, making them irritated.

“Say what?!?” – Sometimes we think our boys understand what we’ve said to them but they actually interpret it differently than we’d like them to. This lack of communication can also be frustrating.

So What?

So, what can moms do to stop being to irritated by our son’s noises?

Here are 5 Things that Should Help:

1. Understand Your Son – Simply understanding the way that God has wired boys can go a long way toward taking away the irritation with our sons. When we don’t understand our boys and their behavior is baffling to us, it can be extremely frustrating. We are less likely to be irritated by our sons once we have a better idea of what behavior we should reasonably expect from them.

2. Feed the Boy – Be sure we are giving them all of the nutrients that they need to help their bodies to function properly. If your son’s noises are driving you nuts and you learn that adding more healthy fats to his diet might help, it’s certainly worth a try.

3. Learn to Communicate – Learning how to say things in a way that your son will better understand is key to being less frustrated by him.

4. Train Him Properly – Our boys may not always know that their behavior is irritating to us. However, if we teach our boys to try not to irritate others, this will help tremendously. In our house, if someone is making noises or doing anything which is driving someone else bonkers, we try to teach them to stop right away as soon as they are asked nicely to stop. This is way less frustrating!

5. Give Him a Break – Our boys need to move! Be sure you’re giving your son ample time throughout the day to make noises and move around. Go outside with your son from time to time and allow him to really let loose. Having regular times when he’s allowed to be loud and wiggly will help your son to have more self control at other times. If you don’t have much outdoor space, there are plenty of indoor activities he can do to get out his extra energy.

If your son’s noises are driving you nuts, try utilizing some of the above techniques and see if that will get you some relief. Our boys may be noisy and they may not even realize it… but armed with the above information, you should find their behavior way more tolerable in the future.

Question: Do your son’s noises drive you nuts? Have you found any other methods which have helped everyone to be less irritated by each other in your home? Please leave a comment below.

The post 6 Reasons Your Son’s Noises are Driving You Nuts! first appeared on True Aim.

It’s elusive; that second hand ticking away. That’s why I’m excited to tell you about these 10 Parenting Hacks to help busy mom save time inspired by a sponsored post from Mondelez via Mode Media.

Too often was I running around like a chicken with my head cut off. Enough was enough. Out of necessity I came up with a few tricks to help me organize my day and help me spend more quality time with my kids.

10 Parenting Hacks for Busy Moms

There’s no time like the present to get more organized and break that cycle of chaos that busy moms often find themselves. Try these simple strategies out and you won’t feel like setting your hair on fire at the end of the day.

Meal Planning

1. The Easiest Meal Plan Ever!!

Say goodbye to meal planning and hello to the meal plan list. Make a list of 30 things your family loves to eat for dinner, 15 things for lunch, and 15 things for breakfast. Whenever you go to the grocery store, quickly pick out 5 things from the list for dinner, 5 things for lunch, and 5 things for breakfast. That means you’ll have left overs 2 nights a week and you’ll have the same thing for lunch and breakfast a couple days a week. In seconds your grocery list and meal plan are done!

2. Rotisserie Chickens

You can easily create 4-5 meals from just one rotisserie chicken. At around $5 a chicken, that is a big money and time saver! Make some freezer meals to save even more time.

3. Quick Wholesome Snacks

Have whole grain snacks handy to keep the kids at bay before dinner time and to give you a boost during the day. Try Honey Maid Go Bites made with real honey, no high fructose corn syrup and has 5 grams of protein and 7 grams of whole grains per serving. It will keep you from reaching for something you’ll regret eating later.

4. Make Grocery Day Meal Prep Day

There are lots of things you can prep ahead of time to get ready for meals during the week. When you get home from the grocery store, just add one extra step before putting things away. Chop and Parboil veggies so their ready for stir fry, soup, or any other recipe by boiling until almost tender then rinse in an ice bath. Measure out spices and dry ingredients and store in plastic bags or containers. Marinate meat for the next days dinner, or put together some slow cooker meals in plastic bags, freeze and when you’re ready to cook, just dump it in the crock pot and press on.

Time Management

5. A Trick for To Do Lists

Maybe you don’t like daily planners, but they are key to having an organized day and home. You at least need a to do list that is prioritized by A, B, and C. A is for things that need to be done that day. B, is for things that you would like to get done, and C is for those things that are extra work, or can be done in a couple days, but maybe you can get 1 of them done early to save even more time later.

6. A Trick for Routines

Don’t have a routine? You need one! Knowing what you’re going to do at what time really helps you conquer your to do list faster and it give the kids a feeling of stability and structure. When your children know what to expect each day, they won’t struggle with transitions or any responsibilities they have. My tip for routines is to set a wake up time for everyone in the house and try to keep it within 30 minutes. Your wake up time should be 15-30 minutes before the kids so you don’t feel like you’re rushing to get ready.

7. Bed Time

Make keeping bed time an easy decision for kids to make by allowing them to stay up later and read if they have cleaned up their room and are in their bed on time.

8. I’m Bored Activities

Keep kids occupied by having special activity ideas on cards or sticks that children can draw from to get ideas on what they should do if they are bored or when you need time to yourself. You can also keep busy bags filled with a small collection of themed toys or a quiet activity for younger children. These can be as simple as dollar store coloring books or there are TONs of ideas on Pinterest.

Set a timer and tell your children they get a small snack like Honey Maid Go Bites, if they are quiet and don’t bother you until the timer goes off.

On the Go

9. Peaceful Car Rides

Gone are the days of yelling and fighting in the car. Make travel binders or notebooks that children can work on while riding or put some special books by their seat to keep them busy while riding around. If your children do well, reward them with praise or a special privilege (10 minutes more to stay up at night for example). If they aren’t being good, have 3 special hand signs you’ve gone over ahead of time so you don’t have to yell. 2 warnings and then if the final hand sign goes up, have a consequence that fits the bad behavior (time out with mom when they get to the destination, going to bed early, no snack).

10. The Go Bag

No, I’m not talking about prepping for an emergency, I’m talking about a bag that is ready for when you need to go somewhere right away. You’ll want to keep a bag filled with wholesome snacks, like Honey Maid Go Bites, a water bottle, warm clothing or sunscreen (depending on the season), extra cash, and a small first aid kit. This can be kept in the car, front entry way closet or mud room.

You’re busy, but no matter how fast things change and how many things you need to get done, you don’t need to feel frazzled doing it all. I hope these tips will help save you time and give you more freedom to spend more wholesome, quality time with your family.

No matter how things change, what makes us wholesome never will. Honey Maid: everyday wholesome snacks for every wholesome family. This is Wholesome.
