Have you ever dealt with bored children stuck in the house on a rainy afternoon? Use one of these educational rainy day activities to keep the kids entertained.
Entertaining Educational Rainy Day Activities
1. Baking
Baking cookies and bread doesn’t just give you a wonderful snack for a rainy afternoon. It also encourages children to put their reading and math lessons to use. Younger children work on counting and measuring. Older children read the recipe. Give your children a challenge by encouraging them to figure out the measurements for the recipe if you need to double or triple it.
2. Poetry Reading
Hold a poetry reading in the living room. Have every child pick out their favorite poem to read aloud to the family. Take turns challenging each other to find funny poems, poems about nature, or poems about the season. Put out some tea and cookies to enjoy a small snack during the poetry reading.
3. Make Forts in the Living Room
Kids adore making tents in the living room. Change the activity by pretending you’re a family from history. Maybe you’re a noble family from the middle ages, a family from ancient Greece, or a pioneer family heading west. What would you eat, do, and see? Set up the houses in the living room and encourage your children to pretend to be in another time and place. Don’t stop there, try one of these other pretend play ideas as well!
4. Build Towers
Challenge your children’s engineering skills by seeing who can build the tallest tower out of blocks. Does making a wide base make a difference? What happens if you begin with a small foundation for the tower? Give the children prizes for who builds the largest, the widest, and the most creative towers.
5. Write on Play Dough
Pull out the play dough. Instead of just having the children play with the play dough, pretend you’re scholars from ancient Mesopotamia and writing in clay. Write sentences and short messages to each other. Discuss the difficulties of writing with a stick and play dough or clay instead of using a pen and paper. This is also a fantastic way to practice spelling words.
Don’t despair when the kids are stuck inside. Instead enjoy one of these educational rainy day activities and spark a love of learning.
