Some days I look around at what started as a “try it out and we’ll see what happens” homeschool experiment and am reminded of how far we have come. We never imagined we would fall in love with it as much as we have! We still have days where we scramble to figure out what we are doing or worry about having time to do it all, but more than anything we have learned to sit back and think about the BIG picture.
Homeschooling Perspective
The hearts of my kids are my sound reminder of the steady work that is being done in their lives. As I was about to hang up some hearts in our school room the other day I realized how much better they would look if the kids decorated them first. We decided to make an activity out of it; brainstorm the things we love about homeschooling and write them on the hearts.
Without hesitation our daughter was busy writing out and asking for help on how to spell her very own reasons for loving our days at home. As I helped her sound out and write her responses I felt an overwhelming sense of pride. Not just because she was forming her letters correctly, but because her answers were so heartfelt. They were simple words for her but to me they were tiny treasures to my heart.
When asked about homeschooling, my five year old doesn’t think of the day where my patience was stretched thin or I frantically ran around last minute pulling together a lesson for the day. She was beaming with excitement as she talked about the days where I let her do her schoolwork in her pajamas, the times where we built a fort to study our sight words, and the moments we all learned something new together. What an encouragement to know that even when I am unsure of how to do this whole homeschooling adventure, that to her it means the world!
We hung some of our hearts up on our wall and I can’t help but smile every time I walk up the stairs into our school room. I have come to love the fact that, just as much as homeschooling teaches my children, the Lord uses it to teach me too. Every day my walls are now marked with little reminders of the things that mean the most! To think I almost hung the hearts plain as only valentines decorations!
Have you asked your children what they love about homeschooling? I’d love to hear about it! Please leave a comment.

My boys also love homeschooling. Mine are a little bit older than yours… 12 and 14 – so they like having more free time to pursue their own interests, not being rushed in the morning, and not having piles of homework. They also like being able to get together with friends during the day on occasion… 🙂
