Let’s Talk About Independence
- Room/Quiet Time: Designate a time for your children to play or do an activity by themselves. Set a timer. Start with 5 minutes and gradually increase the time until they can do 1 hour.
- Benefits: Demonstrate the advantages of being independent by giving them special privileges when they accomplish their tasks. For example, when my daughter learned how to tie her shoes and zip her coat, I let her go outside before her sister and I.
- Patience: Sometimes it is easier and faster for us to do things for our children. However, teaching them these skills now will save you more time later. If your children have the desire to something for themselves, let them do it. Just make sure they ask you politely.
- Let them Struggle: Do not preemptively rush to your children’s aid at the slightest sign of struggle or discomfort. Give them time and space to struggle and work things out on their own. Step in as a last resort.
