I started teaching my daughters how to play piano years ago, but we had a bumpy start. At first, it wasn’t easy doing the traditional book. Then I found some great online piano lessons a couple of years ago that are Free! I was surprised by how much my daughters loved the lessons, and how much easier they made teaching. However, just when my girls were really starting to get the hang of it, we took a short, that become an extended break, and turned into almost a year off.
This post is sponsored by Hoffman Academy. All opinions are my own. For more information please read my full disclosure.
I wanted to start their piano lessons again, but I was afraid that they wouldn’t remember anything. Luckily, I started up again with the free Hoffman Academy online piano lessons, and my daughters picked up right where we left off.
Free Online Piano Lessons
My eldest daughter did surprisingly good and was still able to name all the notes of the keys. Thanks to the online piano lessons she was playing a song right away. We were able to skip the first half of the lessons.
I really like Mr. Hoffman’s method and the fact that I’m not really the one teaching. It takes the time and pressure off of me, and ensures that my girls learn from the a master. Mr.Hoffman has tons unique games and ways of introducing the sounds and notes of the piano. And Audrey and Emma love listening to his stories and playing along.
Learn to Play the Piano
The materials that go along with the lessons are a must. They reinforce the music that the children are playing and help them learn to read musical notation. All the video lessons are free, and there is only a small fee for the unit materials. It is such a minimal fee, and really worth it!
I had Audrey review the musical alphabet with a fun worksheet from his materials and also write the beats of the song that she played in her video lesson.
The exciting part is, now that Audrey is older, I can set up the video lesson for her and let her learn on her own. It won’t take me any time to do the lessons. I just scheduled it into her daily calendar and will be continuing the lessons from now on without interrupting my regular schedule!

I like this so much 🙂 🙂 🙂 I’m currently working on the f# minor nocturne! they’re beautiful pieces.Don’t get me wrong, you have to be strong and confident to be successful in just about anything you do – but with music, there’s a deeper emotional component to your failures and successes. If you fail a chemistry test, it’s because you either didn’t study enough, or just aren’t that good at chemistry (the latter of which is totally understandable). But if you fail at music, it can say something about your character. It could be because you didn’t practice enough – but, more terrifyingly, it could be because you aren’t resilient enough. Mastering chemistry requires diligence and smarts, but mastering a piano piece requires diligence and smarts, plus creativity, plus the immense capacity to both overcome emotional hurdles, and, simultaneously, to use that emotional component to bring the music alive.
Before I started taking piano, I had always imagined the Conservatory students to have it so good – I mean, for their homework, they get to play guitar, or jam on their saxophone, or sing songs! What fun! Compared to sitting in lab for four hours studying the optical properties of minerals, or discussing Lucretian theories of democracy and politics, I would play piano any day.
But after almost three years of piano at Orpheus Academy, I understand just how naïve this is. Playing music for credit is not “easy” or “fun” or “magical” or “lucky.” Mostly, it’s really freakin’ hard. It requires you to pick apart your piece, play every little segment over and over, dissect it, tinker with it, cry over it, feel completely lame about it, then get over yourself and start practicing again. You have to be precise and diligent, creative and robotic. And then – after all of this – you have to re-discover the emotional beauty in the piece, and use it in your performance.

I started some new lessons a few weeks ago I’m virtually ecstatic with how I’ve finally managed to play after a year of slogging away trying to learn to read music. I’ve given up on that and I’m really learning so quickly now by applying some simple tips:
