Use this simple geography lesson to teach your preschooler about where they live. The Discover America State by State Alphabet series books are great to start with! Our state is Idaho. It is a well kept secret. Most people know it for potatoes, but this book shows there is so much more to discover.
Take a look at a unique attribute of Idaho for each letter of the alphabet! The main sentences for each letter rhyme and the topic is further discussed in couple of paragraphs on the side of each page. The book focuses on the natural landscape and wildlife which are Idaho’s biggest assets.
My favorite parts of the book were:
C is for Craters of the Moon, G is for Gem state, H is for Hot Springs, and M is for Mountains and Monarch butterfly.
If I could pick any activity to go with this book, I would go to the Mountains like we do each summer and read it after hiking to the top.
“…F is a Forest, lovely and rare.”
“J is for June when Syringa blooms.”
Since it’s not June, (it snowed yesterday), that couldn’t happen. Instead, my kids and I did a geography activity with the book.
After reading the book, we made little houses and talked about our street name and address. To teach your children their house number, write each number on a separate piece of paper and put them in their house. Mix them up and have your children pull them out and put them in the right order.
Then, we built a library out of blocks and talked about our city. My children took turns driving their Lego cars to and from the Meridian Library. We practiced saying our address to get back home.
I printed out an image of our state and showed them where our city is located.
You can print your own by clicking on the image below.
Then we drew things that we read about in the book on our state and I asked the kids what their favorite thing about Idaho was.
Here are their answers:
Audrey, “I like the rich donkey who found the rock.”
Emma, “I like the bluebirds!”
Finally, I showed them where Idaho is on the Map.
