Depending on what part of the country you’re in, the snow has melted, flowers are starting to bloom, and your feet are begging to slip themselves into an awesome pair of flip-flops. All of this can only mean one thing: springtime is here.
Along with all of these wonderful signs of the season, and the twitterpation of various Disney animals, comes the triumphant return to the local park. But as we all know the shine comes off that new penny very quickly, so if you’re looking to throw some fun and easy activities into your park time repertoire, then you’ve come to the right place.
Wild bug safari
This free, fun, educational, and time consuming activity can be as elaborate or as simple as your little ones can handle. Have your older children catalog the bugs they find in a notebook then research them online when they got home. You can even make it a game where whoever finds the most bugs wins!
Get your kids up and moving with this activity. Set up an easy obstacle course around the park, long jump in the sand box, relay race, shot put an old can of veggies, somersault in the grass, baseball, basketball, you name it! Make this activity into a craft project as well, where the kids make medals for the winners out of cardboard and ribbon.
Collect leaves from all the trees that are indigenous to your area and let the kids glue them into a scrapbook when you get home. Give older kids the task of researching online the name and a couple facts about each tree.
Nature scavenger hunt
Give each child (or team) a collection bag, a time limit and a list of things to find then sit back and watch them go!
Water Balloon Baseball
The rules are the same as regular baseball except all you have is a pitcher, a catcher, a batter and four bases. The goal is to hit the water balloon and pop it; if you do, you get to run to a base. If you miss it three times, you’re out!
An old favorite: Duck Duck Goose
This was one of my favorite things to do on the playground as a kid and, can you believe it, most kids now have no idea how awesome this super simple game is!
This is just a small sampling of fun things you can do that can be adjusted to accommodate any age range or any number of children and can be as involved or as simple as you like. With a little creativity and good weather, you can keep your kids entertained and away from the television all season long!
