You bring up some great points. We've always tithed faithfully, but I also love seeing the church budget so that I know where the money is being spent. And we've been fortunate to be a part of churches that are very humble, with small facilities but big hearts for giving to the needy.

PS: World Gospel Outreach in Honduras is another incredible ministry that cares for orphans.

I can relate to much of what you wrote here. The tithe is an Old Testament requirement. We are encouraged in the New Testament to give, but any time I hear someone preaching about the requirement to tithe 10% or you are stealing from God, I cringe. It's wrong on so many levels.

Wow, this really makes you think! I am so thankful that our church gives freely, and never questions what we do with our tithe money.

THANK YOU. This is excellent. I could go on and on, but just want to say how glad I am to see an article from someone taking this stance over the ridiculous feel good fluff our churches have turned to as a waste of both our time and money for God.

Love this. I attended a church for quite some time where money was being spent on outrageous things, while the food pantry was constantly empty, and the homeless were turned away because of this. When I offered up the idea of using the church kitchens to cook meals for the homeless instead of having the church sit empty 6 days a week, I was told that wasn't doable due to insurance and liability issues.
After spending several years of not feeling right about tithing, but continuing to tithe, I finally hit the same point as you-- I realized we needed to find a different church. That as long as we continued to go there and help fund a church who wasn't truly doing God's work, we were part of the problem. It was really hard to walk away, but I now attend a church where I feel good about tithing. And of course I give money to other organizations and ministries dear to my heart.
Thank you for writing this and helping me realize I'm not alone!

I did not grow up in a Christian family, so when I became a church-going Christian, I struggled a LOT with tithing. I am a member of our church council, so I go and sit in all the meetings where we look at the budget and talk about where everything goes. But I've been confused for years by the small attendance at these meetings. Every single church council meeting is Open Door. Honestly, if anyone ever asked me what I thought they should do before becoming a member of our church, I would say, "Go to a church council meeting. See how decisions are made. See where the money goes."

I've been frustrated in years where we wrote an ambitious budget, when no one at our annual meeting asked a single question about items on the budget. No one ever questions a raise for the pastor, even if the church couldn't afford it based on current tithing trends. As a leader in my church, I've been repeatedly very disturbed by the number of people that just want to write a check and forget about the rest.

I come from a small church, so we have an annual budget that's closer to the annual budget of a family, than the annual budget of an amphitheater. It makes it a little easier to feel like my money belongs with my home church. But, I agree with you that I would probably feel differently if I was ever told not to do special collections with the kids in my Sunday School classes or if I ever wanted to take part in something that the rest of the church just wouldn't stand behind (like pro-life stuff). I hope your new church is more in line with what you believe Jesus would want for His church.
