]]> What’s Christmas all about?  The nativity scene – when God gave us the ultimate gift!  His Son being born on earth is THE highlight of history.  I wanted to emphasize that during snack time when our friends were visiting.  So everyone made their own nativity snack to help them remember the real reason for the season.

To really drive the story of Jesus’ birth home, I made them work for their snack.  First I read Luke 2:8-16 and Matthew 2:1-2.  Then I asked them questions about what we read, and after each question they got part of their snack.

Ingredients for a Nativity Snack

Gram Crackers for the stable

Peanut Butter for “hay” and to help things stick together

Thinly Sliced Apples for Jesus’ bed

Almonds or Mini Marshmallows for baby Jesus

Grapes cut in half lengthwise for bodies and some ends cut for heads

Popcorn for sheep

Pineapple or star fruit for the star

Questions I asked for each part of their snack:

“Why do we celebrate Christmas?”  It’s Jesus’ birthday (answer) – I gave them their apple slice and almond.

“Where was Jesus born?” In a barn/stable/with the animals (answer) – gram crackers and popcorn.

“What was His mom’s name, and His earthly dad’s name?” Mary and Joseph (answer) – grape people.

“Why did the Magi come to visit?”  They saw a big star (answer) – pineapple star.

“Why is Jesus so important to us?  He came to save us from our sin (answer) – Start letting them eat!

The kids had so much fun putting their Nativity scenes together and eating them, they wanted to do it again.  Just to make sure they knew the story, I quizzed them again.  Sorry, no free meals at my house today!

After our snack we made some jingle bell wands and sang a fun birthday song to Jesus!  Happy Birthday Jesus, we love you!
