Six Ways to Celebrate the National Poetry Month

1. Choose a Poet to Study

There have been many wonderful poets throughout the ages such as Emily Dickinson, William Wordsworth, or Robert Frost. Choose a favorite poet to study in your homeschool this month. Read a biography, and enjoy his or her poetry. Spend time getting to know one poet in April.

2. Read Poetry Books

There are many wonderful poetry books available for children. Instead of reading literature aloud to your kids, choose a few poetry books to read. Enjoy A Child’s Garden of Verses, laugh over Where the Sidewalk Ends, or even read Mother Goose together. There are many wonderful books of poetry available.

3. Copy Favorite Poem

Pick a favorite poem among those you’ve read with your children. Did a Mother Goose rhyme strike your fancy, or perhaps “The Little Turtle” by Vachel Lindsay is a favorite. Copy the poem neatly onto a sheet of loose leaf paper. Decorate the poem with drawings and designs, before framing the picture to hang on the wall.

4. Memorize a Poem

Choose one of the poems or a psalm to memorize as a family. Recite the poem three times a day, or use mealtimes for memory work. It won’t be long before everyone is reciting the poem together.

5. Write a Poem

Write poetry this month. Explore various styles of poetry such as haiku, limericks, free verse and sonnets. Try a spring writing prompt for subject ideas. Use the rainbow word activity to create beautiful artwork of the poems your children write. When the poem is finished, frame it to hang on the living room wall.

6. Recitation Party

At the end of April plan a recitation party with friends. Post pictures of favorite artists on the wall, and display the poems written over the month. The heart of the party are the recitations. Each child gets an opportunity to stand before family and friends to recite poetry they’ve memorized in April or poetry they’ve written.

April, as the National Poetry Month, is a wonderful month to spend focusing on poetry. Read good poems, copy and write poetry, and end the month celebrating poetry with friends.
