This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Create the Good for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

I’ve volunteered several times for all different causes. Those were some of the best times of my life. I wish I could commit more time to creating good in my community, but being a mom of 5 little ones has me attached to the home. It’s hard to find time to help those in need, but it is necessary. When you give, you live a more full life. It always ends up coming back to you in different ways.

It’s especially important for me to set the example for my children. I want them to be thinking of others more than themselves. Their emotional well-being depends on it! So I’ve thought of some creative ways to give back without having to leave home.

5 Ways Moms Can Volunteer at Home

When I volunteer from home I make a point of including my children whenever possible or at least let them know what I’m doing.

1. Join Create the Good

Create the Good matches people who want to help their communities with non-profit organizations. Register on Create the Good’s website to receive updates on volunteer opportunities in your area. Help spread the word about the site and/or the volunteer opportunities. This is as simple as checking your email updates and telling your friends, family, or church members about what you get in them!

You could also take it one step further and help an organization or cause that you believe in make a video to submit to the Create the Good Dream Builder Video Contest. This might be as simple as telling the organization about the contest or helping them make and edit a video. It doesn’t have to be fancy! Pull out your phone and record yourself! But hurry, all videos need to be submitted by 2/7/2016.

The public will vote on which of 12 selected finalist videos inspires them most. The winning video will receive a $2,500 charity donation and three runner up videos will win a $500 donation to the non-profit cited in their video as the charity of their choice.

2. Social Media

It’s easy to get on Facebook throughout the day and you know you do it way to much already, right!? So why not help your favorite organizations out while you are there. Go to their Facebook page and like their posts, share their posts, help them attract attention to their page and their cause! You don’t know how much it means to them when you do this. It’s like free advertising. While your over there, make sure you like the Create the Good Facebook page.

You could take it one step further and ask if an organization needs help managing their social media accounts. That could be as simple as scheduling prewritten posts to their accounts, helping them get a newsletter started, or writing articles on their blog. I’ve helped with a couple of Facebook pages before and it was a lot of fun!

3. Make Art

Are you an artist? Are you a photographer? Maybe you are good at making those inspirational quotes into shareable pictures that people like to share on Instagram? You can donate these mediums to organizations so they don’t have to pay for them or waste time finding them on their own. They can sell art & photography for needed funds, they can use it in their offices or newsletters, blogs and social media. Help them communicate their mission in a beautiful way and all from home!

4. Meals & Goodies

There are organizations that bring and provide meals for people, and you might be able to help prepare some of those things at home. However, volunteers and people who work at those organizations need to eat too. When you support those involved in helping others, you just bolster the cause even more and give much needed encouragement. Try baking up some snacks and goodies and drop them off on your way to the grocery store. Don’t have time to make something and bring it to them? You can do it all from home! Just pick up the phone and order delivery pizza for lunch for them or buy one of those subscription snack boxes that are delivered every month!

5. The Power of Words

Yes! Your words are worth their weight in gold. Organizations need funds, sure, but there is something amazing about hearing how much their work is appreciated. Be a cheerleader for another volunteer or organization. This would work for people in need as well. Those who are suffering or lonely rarely hear words of encouragement. Be a positive voice through the negative situations people are dealing with. You can send a card, write a letter, shoot someone an email. Tell them that the world would be a sad sad place without them and their big hearts. Tell them how much hope they have filled your heart with. Tell them that they are important and needed and not alone.

How about you? What are you doing from home for others? I would love to hear how you create the good!

Want to teach your children values?
Below, you will find tips, tools, and resources to teach them about Kindness

Definition

Kindness is treating your neighbor as yourself. A kind person is helpful and has a generous attitude.

Verse

“Anyone who withholds kindness from a friend forsakes the fear of the Almighty.” Job 6:14″Those who are kind benefit themselves, but the cruel bring ruin on themselves.” Proverbs 11:17

Activities

Let’s Talk About Kindness

Random Acts: Small gestures make a big difference. Make a plan to do something kind for another person with your child at least one day a week. It could be holding the door for someone at the store, bringing the neighbors a special treat, or taking the Kids for Kindness Challenge! Soon, kindness will become a habit in your family.

Through Play: Children learn and develop their personality through play. Don’t allow them to pretend to be mean, bossy, and wicked during their play. For example, My daughters love to play house. Audrey likes to be the Mom and Emma and the other dolls are her children. I don’t let Audrey pretend to be mean and bossy to Emma, and I don’t let Emma be sassy and rude to her sister. Be vigilant. Chances are, if they are practicing it through their play, it will come out when interacting with others.

Practice Makes Perfect: How your children treat you is a good indication of how they will treat others. Help them practice kindness by teaching them basic Manners at home. Don’t let your children ask for anything without a “please” and if they don’t use “thank you” when you hand it to them, take it back. This will make their behavior outside of your home even better!

Kill’em with Kindness: Kindness is powerful. If you can teach your children to react to negative comments with kindness instead of a negative emotion, they will be happier, more confident, and have less bullies. Practice this by asking them to respond to your question like, “I don’t like your shirt” with a nice comment like, “Oh, well I think your shirt is really cool. Where did you get it?” They might just make a friend from an enemy.

This story isn’t just for Christmas. A classic tale by Charles Dickens; this version is for children with intricate illustrations. However, you can find the original version for free in our Resource Center. Ages 5+

Character Book set

Strong character and social finesse are essential for success in life. Unfortunately, most preschool curriculum sets neglect these two areas in favor of more conventional subjects. The books included in this set will teach your children to act in accordance with Biblical virtues, like: love for God, respect for authority, hard work, self-discipline, personal accountability, and an awareness and concern for others.

These books give parents practical ideas for fostering these virtues in their children’s day to day lives. We have also included Responsibility Charts that help help parents systematically introduce chores and responsibilities to their children.

Activities That Teach Values: Kindness

The Compliment Game

Simply take turns saying something nice about the other person. Use your fingers to time the person so they don’t take longer than 10 seconds to think of something. The game ends when someone can’t think of anything to say. You could also eliminate people until you have a winner.
