Want to teach your children values? Below, you will find tips, tools, and resources to teach them about Independence.

Definition

Independence is taking care of yourself with little help from others. Independent people are not lazy. They never ask others to do things that they can do for themselves.

Verse

“We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.” Hebrews 6:12

“Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.” Proverbs 10:4

Let’s Talk About Independence

Room/Quiet Time: Designate a time for your children to play or do an activity by themselves. Set a timer. Start with 5 minutes and gradually increase the time until they can do 1 hour.

Benefits: Demonstrate the advantages of being independent by giving them special privileges when they accomplish their tasks. For example, when my daughter learned how to tie her shoes and zip her coat, I let her go outside before her sister and I.

Patience: Sometimes it is easier and faster for us to do things for our children. However, teaching them these skills now will save you more time later. If your children have the desire to something for themselves, let them do it. Just make sure they ask you politely.

Let them Struggle: Do not preemptively rush to your children’s aid at the slightest sign of struggle or discomfort. Give them time and space to struggle and work things out on their own. Step in as a last resort.
