That’s why we’ve created these simple preschool drawing worksheets.  They guide children’s hands through the basic lines and shapes needed to create any letter in the alphabet.

Handwriting for Preschoolers

With clear directions using green and red dots, children can easily practice handwriting skills on their own.  Simply print out the worksheets and slip them into sheet protectors.  Now using dry erase markers, you’ve created a reusable drawing tool!  Preschoolers love having their own “drawing” book.  Keep it accessible to them throughout the day so they can practice whenever they want.

Once children successfully complete the basic drawing worksheets on their own, they’re ready to form their first letters!

Our Prewriting printables include the basic shape worksheets my daughter is working on at the top of the post. These are easy to use and large enough for small hands to trace.

Schedule practice into your children’s routine so they get used to using their handwriting and drawing book, but also keep it readily available.  Remember to keep their scheduled practice time short and reward them for a job well done!  We like to use popsicle sticks, stickers, healthy snacks, and words of praise.

More Handwriting Worksheets

Once your children master the prewriting worksheets, you can start on letters, numbers and more! Try our penmanship workbook for everything you need to teach your children to write! Learn more by clicking the picture below.

There are many more activities to help reinforce what they learn in their handwriting and drawing books.  My daughters like to make Handmade Cards and books.

How do you practice handwriting and drawing with your preschoolers?

Animals are one of her favorite things to draw. Especially when she can draw lots of them on one page and make a scene. Step-by-Step Drawing Animals is a perfect book for that.

It has children drawing simple shapes to make over 40 different animals and gives them ideas on how to color them. It also includes space right in the book for children to practice each drawing.

How to Draw a Parrot

My daughter picked the parrot to draw first. She drew him so fast that I missed most of the beginning stages of the bird.

As you can see, the book shows how to draw a parrot step-by-step. It has children piece together simple shapes to create the animal they want. This is a perfect book for learning to draw because that is exactly what you do to draw anything you see; piece shapes together.

Then my daughter added some more animals to complete her jungle scene. Next I showed her another way that you could use the book to make animals.

We drew the different shapes of the parrot onto construction paper and cut them out. First a leaf shape for the parrot’s body, some triangles for it’s head and curves for the beak.

Then we pieced them together with glue on another piece of construction paper. The result is a bold work of paper art that can be done with any of the animals in the Step-by-Step drawing book.

Both types of kid art help children think creatively and logically. What animal would your child like to draw?
