I’ve always known nuts were a healthy snack, so I loaded up a few bags at the bulk food store to try and curb my cravings.  While I do love nuts, the plain ones just don’t satisfy.  So, I did a little experiment with the sweetener in my Homemade Granola, and it worked!  I’ve made the best homemade honey roasted nuts ever!

 Now, I don’t feel too bad about munching these little gems between meals; maybe it’s more like gobbling.  Oh well, at least I know they don’t have any ingredients in them that I can’t pronounce, right?

I’m hoping that my daughter will make these enough times with me that when she gets a little older she can make them all by herself.  It is just so easy and it costs a lot less than buying them at the store.

For my honey roasted nuts, I used a mixture of raw almonds, raw cashews, and unsalted roasted peanuts.

My sweetener was butter, honey, and brown sugar.  I made a double batch this time because the first time I made them there just wasn’t enough!

A healthier sweet and salty snack you just can get enough of!

Ingredients

• 3 cups of nuts
• 2 tbs butter or oil
• 3 tbs sweetener of your choice
• ½ tsp Kosher salt to taste
• ½ tsp Sugar to taste

Instructions

1. Prepare a baking pan with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 325.
2. If using butter, melt it in a separate bowl or measuring cup and mix in your sweetener.
3. Place your nuts in a bowl and pour sweetener mixture on top, mixing thoroughly.
4. Spread them on the prepared baking pan and bake for 10 minutes. Remove them from the oven, stir, and bake them for 10 minutes more or until golden.
5. Remove and immediately pour them into a bowl and stir or they will stick together in chunks. Toss them with salt and sugar to taste and allow them to cool completely before storing them in an air-tight container.

You can also try adding spices to the nuts before baking them.  Cayenne or cinnamon would be nice.

This year we experimented with Plaster of Paris.  It is a little messy to work with, but with the simple steps I used you can make beautiful keepsake ornaments!  This post contains an awesome giveaway, for more information read my full disclosure.

We received an awesome stepping stone kit from CraftProjectIdeas.com and used it to make our ornaments.

I didn’t pay any attention to the directions that were included, but knew from working with it before that the key to plaster of paris is the amount of water you use.  Here’s what we did…

Homemade Plaster of Paris Ornaments

First I had to find a mold that was small enough to make something that wouldn’t fall off the tree.  Yogurt lids worked perfectly.  I covered them with plastic wrap so they wouldn’t stick. Next, I gathered everything we needed in one place so we could work fast.

I poured half of a bag of plaster into a container and slowly mixed in the water until the mixture resembled pancake batter.  If the mixture was a little runny, I added more plaster.  I filled 2 yogurt lids with the mixture and let my daughter decorate one with the jewels that were included and a little glitter.   I put little pieces of straws in the plaster to make holes so we could hang the ornaments after they dried.

I also received an Ultimate Box of Projects and the name describes it perfectly.  How did they get all those crafts into one box?  We had a great time at home making necklaces and heart mosaics.

It also came in handy at a family thanksgiving party.  It kept the children busy for an hour making different crafts.
