Handwriting for Preschoolers

With clear directions using green and red dots, children can easily practice handwriting skills on their own.  Simply print out the worksheets and slip them into sheet protectors.  Now using dry erase markers, you’ve created a reusable drawing tool!  Preschoolers love having their own “drawing” book.  Keep it accessible to them throughout the day so they can practice whenever they want.

Once children successfully complete the basic drawing worksheets on their own, they’re ready to form their first letters!

Our Prewriting printables include the basic shape worksheets my daughter is working on at the top of the post. These are easy to use and large enough for small hands to trace.

Schedule practice into your children’s routine so they get used to using their handwriting and drawing book, but also keep it readily available.  Remember to keep their scheduled practice time short and reward them for a job well done!  We like to use popsicle sticks, stickers, healthy snacks, and words of praise.

With each letter, the app shows my children how to write the letter and says the name of the letter. Then there are guidelines that help them as they trace the letter and the line will show in red if they make a mistake, like going too far out of the lines or picking up their finger too soon.

There are also common words that you can trace and you can even add your own words. I use that feature for spelling practice for my older children. For the common pre-loaded words, the app says each letter of the word and then the whole word with a picture example. My children aren’t just getting visual and hands-on practice, but they are hearing the letters as well!

Another awesome feature that I haven’t seen before is the ability to print off worksheets so children can practice on paper and pencil. This is so convenient to test your children and see what letters they need more practice with.
