Fun Fall Nature Study Activities

1. Collect Leaves

Head outside with your children and collect falling leaves. Look for all of the different colors of leaves. Compare the different shapes and sizes. See if you and your children can find out which leaf belongs to which tree.

Once you’ve collected a variety of leaves, bring the leaves inside to decorate the windows for fall.

Pick up some clear contact paper and carefully place the leaves on the sticky side of the paper. When you’re finished, hang the paper on the windows.

You’ll have beautifully decorated windows for the fall.

2. Pick Apples

Apple season is here! The apples are finally ripe and are ready to drop. If you don’t have an apple tree nearby, head out to a local farm to go apple picking. Kids adore picking fruit to eat right off the tree.

Once you’re home, chop some apples in half to show the children the apple seeds inside the fruit. Remember to explain the fruits are the product of a plant and carry seeds inside them.

Be sure to make caramel apples, apple muffins, and apple pies to finish off your adventure.

3. Collect Pine Cones

Collecting pine cones is another fabulous and fun fall nature activity. Head to a local park with plenty of evergreen trees and see just how many pine cones you can find.

Take a bunch of pine cones home.

Point out to the children how the pine cones are closed to protect their seeds and preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil or wax paper and place the pine cones on the sheet before popping them in the oven for 30 minutes.

Show the children how the heat opened up the pine cones to release the seeds.

Finish off the pine cone activity by tying a string to the top of the pine cone and spreading peanut butter all over it. Roll the pine cone in bird seed and you have a bird feeder to hang in the yard.

4. Bird Watching

Fall is the time of year when many birds are gathering into flocks and preparing to head south. It’s a splendid time to start bird watching.

Hang the pine cone bird feeders you made near the windows and see how many birds come by to enjoy the feast from the warm of your house. It’s a fabulous way to enjoy nature study from inside a warm house.

Older children can have fun trying to identify the various types of birds they see in the yard using some easy kids books.

5. Nature hike

Take your kids out on nature hikes. As you’re hiking be sure to point out signs of fall you’ve studied so far. Point out the ripe berries, falling leaves, and flocks of birds gathering before heading south.

Collect pine cones, leaves, and stones. When you get home you can enjoy one of these nature science activities with your kids.

Fall is a delightful time for outdoor activities. You and your kids can explore nature together before heading inside to enjoy more activities in the warmth of the house.

You will need a white board, markers, leaves and a dice. Use both of these to alternate, which makes it more fun, or if your child is not yet familiar with the numbers itself. Draw a tree on the board and let the fun begin!

 
 We did a matching activity first, just to get the brain going. I added the numbers and the dots on the tree. Lella(5 years), rolled the dices and matched it with the leaves.

Then, she rolled a dice, and I added the number(2) below the tree. She counted out the leaves and placed it on the tree. Another roll, adding the number(3), and leaves. She counted all the leaves on the tree to get to the answer(5), which I wrote down for her at first. Later she wanted to do the writing herself, I only helped with the +, = etc.

If your child is not yet familiar with written numbers and mathematical signs and you would rather use this activity as a playful counting activity, leave out the sum writing below the tree and “play” it like a story. For instance: “One day there was a tree, and each day the tree woke up his leaves changed. The first day(add leaves), he had 3 green leaves, the next day he had 2 red leaves….” Carry on like that,mother for the subtracting side: “The wind started blowing one night and when the tree woke up, 4 leaves had fallen on the ground (remove leaves), now there were only 1 leaf left on the tree…”

After doing a whole bunch of these easy sums, I introduced the minus concept. This is something we will work more on in the feature, but perhaps you will want to use this as an extension activity. Turn the game around now, and start with a larger number (whatever your child is familiar with), roll the dice to see how many leaves will fall off (be subtracted).

This activity is fun and hands on which is the best way for children to learn, right?

Look around the next time you are at the park in the fall. Most of the children there will have a runny nose or cough.

It can be hard to decide what to dress your children in when the fall weather changes so quickly. It may freeze at night, but then gets warm and sunny during the day. Here are three tips that I use to keep my little ones comfortable during this unpredictable weather season.

We live in Idaho, so most days are sunny. That can be misleading because you’ll look outside and see the beautiful sun, but step outside and you may feel blistering winds and chilling temperatures. It can be 10 degrees cooler in the shade and if the wind stops, you’ll be sweating in your thick winter jacket.

Dressing Children Comfortably and Frugally

I’ve had to get creative when it comes to dressing my little ones and not busting my budget. Here’s what I keep in mind when I’m shopping for clothes or putting together an outfit for fall.

1. Layers

Instead of a thick winter coat, it is better to dress kids in a couple layers of light clothing. This way, they can remove them and put them back on as the weather changes.

I usually pick a short sleeve shirt/dress and a light sweater or hooding for their top half. For my girls, I choose thicker leggings, or even tights under light leggings as pants. For my boys, I like sweat pants or jeans.

Garanimals from Walmart always has seasonally appropriate choices for babies and toddlers that won’t hurt your budget. I can usually find great pieces for about the same price as thrift stores.

2. Heat Rises

Most parents forget one of the easiest ways to dress their children comfortably. It is also really inexpensive. Just get them a hat!

This will help keep the warm air from escaping from the top of their head and can protect their eyes and ears from the wind. Ear muffs, or a thick headband works too.

3. Extremities

The first thing to get cold on my babies are their fingers and toes. Extra socks or a pair of boots help keep their feet cozy.

For fingers, I hate regular gloves. They are so hard to put on and my children can’t pick anything up or do much of anything with them on. Fingerless gloves or mittens that fold back for easy access to fingers work best for my children.

Colors, counting, even sewing; leaves make great learning tools that all children like to collect.
