Don’t be fooled. Cooking is DEFINITELY a learning activity. We do it three times a day and if you’re like me, you do it more!

I know so many people who had no idea how to cook when they got out of school. What happened? They ate out, a LOT. Then what happened? Eventually their health caught up with them and they realized something had to change. Then they learned to cook.

I don’t want that for my children. I want them to know about food and how to cook from the beginning.

I’m not too worried about perfecting any skills because cooking with your children is more about confidence. When they have experience in the kitchen it brings a confidence that gives them more freedom and more variety. They catch the I-Can attitude that transfers to other areas of life and enables them to refine their skills on their own.

To get your children started, I’m sharing my favorite recipes for my kids to cook.

Top 10 Recipes for Kids to Cook

I like these recipes the most because they are easy, healthy, and require little adult supervision. The key to cooking with your children is to repeat. Repeat the recipe many times with them so they know how to do it by themselves. Then, introduce variations of the same recipe to show them how they can make it their own. Give them choices and start turning them into little chefs.

Allow them to take the reigns. My daughter makes breakfast on Saturday and I let her come up with whatever she wants. Sometimes it’s just cereal. Other times it is scrabbled eggs and toast. Often it’s messy but the knowledge and confidence she gains is worth it.

Incredible Edible Egg

Speaking of eggs, this is one of the easiest healthy things kids can learn to cook and their are lots of different ways to cook an egg.

Boiled Eggs

This is the easiest and safest way for kids to cook boiled eggs.

Boiled Egg Faces

Then turn those boiled eggs into a fun and creative snack.

It’s after the Easter Holiday and you look in the fridge. You see tie-dyed eggs, neon eggs, oh and crayon resist eggs you saw on Pinterest that you had to try. What are you going to do with them all!? If only your kids were as excited about eating them as you are about getting them out of your fridge. Well, try this fun snack kids can make themselves. They’ll love making art with their food!

How to: Egg Faces Snack

I made this snack into an activity by having my daughter come up with some of the ingredients we could use to make faces on our eggs. We brainstormed lots of things to get her really involved in the creative process. Ultimately we were constrained by the limited supplies in the refrigerator; cucumbers, carrots, and sunflower seeds, but we’ll have lots of ideas for next time!

My daughter made the boiled eggs all by herself using this safe and easy method that makes peeling really easy. Then she cut the eggs into thin slices. It was a little tricky, but she enjoyed eating the scraps.

We prepared everything else we needed to assemble our snack; toasted the toast, peeled some carrots and cut up some cucumbers.

For younger children, this could be a great time to talk about feelings and the different faces we make for each. Can your child make a mad egg face? How about a super silly one? Or how about making a face yourself and seeing if your child can copy it? Whatever you end up doing, it will be deliciously fun!

My daughter loved making her faces, and eating them too. She even asked me if she could make them again tomorrow. Good breakfast idea Audrey! And if she wants to clear my fridge of boiled eggs, God bless her heart!

What kind of ingredients would you use to make egg faces? I think a little homemade fry sauce would be good!

If you make these at home with your child, please share a picture on our Facebook page. I’d love to share the cuteness with my followers.

Eggs in a Basket

Ingredients:

6 Pieces of Bread

Butter

2-3 Eggs

1-2 Tablespoons Milk

Fresh or Dried Herbs

Salt and Pepper

Directions:

Pre-heat griddle to 350°. Then, have your children pick different cookie cutters to cut shapes into the bread. Make sure they cut in the middle and turn the bread over and cut again to make sure that the shape is totally cut through.

Next, have them butter the bread on all sides while you mix up the eggs. I put the eggs and milk in a liquid measuring cup so I can pour it into the bread molds easily. Mix in whatever herbs that you like. You could also try adding green onion and red bell pepper.

Place your bread on the hot griddle and hold it down while you pour in the egg mixture. Let the eggs set a little before you let go of the bread to make sure that the eggs don’t run out all over the bottom. Season with salt and pepper. It would be fun to make a little face on the animal or people shapes with veggies. I like to add a little bit of Parmesan cheese on ours after the eggs cook for a couple of minutes.

Cook for 4-5 minutes or until the eggs look set, but still slightly wet. Turn and cook for 1-2 minutes more. Season again with salt and pepper.

Sometimes the eggs run out a little on the bottom, but just serve shape side up with the matching shape toast. Aren’t they fun!?

My daughter is in the kitchen a lot. I thought I would teach her how to boil an egg so she could do it by herself sometime. While the water boiled and her pretty face looked at the steam rising up, I shuttered at the thought of her getting burned and knew there had to be a safer way.

The way I was showing her wasn’t safe for her to do alone, especially in the morning when she is still in a zombie-like state. So, I came up with a way for her to make a hard boiled eggs that limits the risk of serious injury.

The Best Way to Boil an Egg

This isn’t just the best way because it is safer. The eggs come out easy to peel and that is best when the kids are cooking!

First, have your child place the eggs in a pot on the stove. Fill the pot with water an inch or two above the eggs and turn the stove on to high. You could also try putting in a teaspoon of baking soda which is supposed to help them peel even easier. Wait until the water comes to a boil, cook 1 minute, and turn off the heat. Cover and let the eggs cook for about 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, have your children make some toast to go with your perfectly boiled eggs.

Remove them from the heat and simply let the eggs sit until they are cool enough to handle, or put some ice into the pot. If you want to use the eggs for later, I suggest putting the whole pot, including the water, in the refrigerator. That way the water keeps the lining that is under the shell moist so it’s easy to remove.

Peel and enjoy!

But wait, your kids don’t like hard boiled eggs? They might after you let them cook them all by themselves. Or, you can try telling them that they are special eggs like we did with our children. Pretending they are eating dinosaur eggs is a lot more interesting. Adding a little butter and salt helps too.
