I’ll admit it, I’m one of those homeschool moms that doesn’t branch out often as far as curriculum goes. So when I had the opportunity to check out The Electrifying Nervous System from the science series God’s Wonderful Machine by Master Books, I was apprehensive, yet very intrigued.

{Disclosure: I received a copy of The Electrifying Nervous System for review and was compensated for my time in writing this review. My opinions are my own and I was not required to write a positive review. Your experience may vary.}

The author, Lainna Callentine M.Ed., M.D. was an elementary school teacher before she became a medical doctor, a profession she left behind to homeschool her three children. Her knowledge and experience in the teaching and medical field give her points in my book, and that is just scraping the surface of her accomplishments.

The Electrifying Nervous System

The Electrifying Nervous System is a basic overview of the human nervous system geared toward students in 3rd-6th grade. It is the first book of 9 in the God’s Wondrous Machine series, though only 2 are available to purchase right now. Dr. Callentine does well at piquing the interest of our younger generation in this field of study. My oldest son (he’s 8) really liked the “wacky and weird” facts, as well as the photographs. Dr. Callentine Keeps descriptions and definitions short and interesting, unlike some science textbooks written for this age level.

The book is written from a Christian worldview, with many Scripture references scattered throughout, which I love! It is also filled with interesting diagrams which catch the attention of young readers. Even I found myself caught up in the wonder of the human nervous system!

My oldest is 8, and reads at a 5th grade level (thanks to his Father’s genetics), and the reading was a bit cumbersome for him. He was able to comprehend most of it, but with some of the larger medical terms, he got a bit lost. I think it would be perfect with review questions, hands on activities, or other helpful tools to reinforce learning. Supplemental materials can be purchased separately to help with that. This book was a good length, interesting, and full of facts and Scripture. Take a look at the book trailer below and see for yourself!

Homeschool Science Curriculum

If you are interested in teaching body systems to your children, give God’s Wondrous Machine a try! The series includes the respiratory system as well as the nervous system book that we used. Download a sample of the Nervous System Book here. With a few supplemental materials purchased from God’s Wondrous Machine, I think this would be a great addition to your homeschool science curriculum!

It’s hard to find science books and lessons that don’t revolve around the theory of evolution. I’m always having to edit out millions of years, and how humans are related to animals and plants.

That’s why I was really excited to try this new Christian Homeschool Science Curriculum.

As part of a sponsored post from Kendall Hunt Publishing I received a Free copy of ByDesign. All opinions are honest and I was not required to give a positive review.

ByDesign Christian Science Homeschool Curriculum

When my ByDesign Science set came in the mail I flipped through all of the materials; Student Edition, Science Journals, and Teacher Edition. The first thing that really stood out was the beautiful images. There were no cartoons and very few drawings. Everything was pictures of real animals, plants and examples of scientific principals.

When using the curriculum, I included all of my children in the lessons. Although I received 1st grade, my kindergartner was captivated by the images in the book and was happy to sit and listen as we took turns reading.

The teachers guide is very complete and offers lesson plans to schedule your learning. We like to take an interest-driven approach so I just read a couple pages and then asked my children if they’d like to hear more. We continued reading a whole section. My 1st-grader, Audrey, continued to flip through the book looking at the pictures and asking questions. That’s what science is all about, right?

Curriculum Features

Right off the bat, the book attributes God as the maker of all living things. Throughout the book there are scripture references for Bible study and questions that help children connect the Bible to science. We LOVED it!

The book is well organized so you can easily find extension activities, scripture verses, and questions to ask your children.

For each main section there are science journals to help children go through the scientific process for the concepts they are learning in the text.

Science Activities

The first section of the student edition is about living things. We read the section about plants and decided to go one of their ‘Explore-a-lab’ activities.

We enjoyed a nature walk collecting leaves and other plant material to take back home and sort.

This activity was the kind that you can break up and make it last the whole week. That way you can keep up with all your other lessons, or you can combine this science curriculum into your writing, reading, and math lessons. There are ideas for all of that in the teachers manual!

Next we sorted all the things we collected and talked about the different things we found. I asked my children if they knew some of the plant names of the things that we found. They knew a few, but had no clue what some of them were.

As we made prints of the leaves, I continued to remind my children what we read in the ByDesign book about plants, the different parts, what they need to live, and what day of creation God made them.

We labeled our prints so we could remember what kind of trees they were from and it was great time! I can’t wait to explore the rest of the book with my children and learn more about God’s beautiful creation! Why not join us and purchase a copy today!

Christian Homeschool Curriculum from Kendall Hunt

Although this is a publication of the Seventh-Day Adventist church, I found that all of the Biblical Principals in this science curriculum were in-line with my non-denominational Christian Faith.

If you would like to learn more about this Christian Science Program for grades 1-8 as well as preview all the levels, go to the ByDesign website.

Kendall Hunt also provides faith-based programs in Reading Language Art called (Pathways) and a New Kindergarten program (Stepping Stones).

In six days the God created the world. On the seventh he rested, not for His sake, but for man’s. The seventh day was to be holy. The Sabbath was meant to be a day of rest and refocus; a reminder of our purpose in life. Yet, in the last hundred years, Christians seem to have forgotten the importance of the Sabbath.

Because our society is in the process of turning its back on God, keeping the sabbath is not easy. To the rest of America, the Lord’s Day is just another day. If you want to raise your children in the Lord, the Sabbath is a must; it is God’s weekly devotion. Don’t try to replace it with your own version. God’s knows your family’s needs better than you do.

So, what is the Sabbath and how can we keep it in today’s secular world? The Sabbath is one day in seven to rest and worship God. It is a whole day, not a Church service.

Keeping the whole Sabbath used to be a big struggle for me. I’d wake early and work, go to Church (where I often daydreamed about work) and then returned home and continued my work. I wasn’t keeping the Sabbath; I wasn’t giving that day over to the Lord. I was checking a spiritual block and then returning to my ‘pressing’ work.

If you want to keep the Sabbath I’d recommend sundown Saturday night to sundown Sunday night. That is a full day and I promise, God is worth it.

If we want our children to respect the Sabbath, then we have to set the example. I recommend that parents try not to work on Sunday, unless your work is in emergency care. Jesus says that, “It is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” So, when we talk about work, we are talking about working for our own benefit.

When I first attempted to take the Sabbath more seriously, I resolved NOT to work on my business on Sunday. Then I did something worse. I worked hard all week, sometimes 16 hour days, only on my business. So when Sunday came around all the house and yard work had piled up and I used “my day of rest and worship” to catch up on it.

Instead of doing petty chores during the workweek, I was saving them for the Sabbath, again putting my work ahead of God.

It is funny how hard we try to find a way around honoring the Sabbath when the Sabbath was created for our own benefit; honoring God is what we were made for and when we do it our lives work better.

There is no job, no soccer game, no football game that can fill that void. The minute you start compromising, cutting the day short, substituting days, claiming work is rest for you, redefining work, you begin to destroy the Sabbath for yourself; and you and your family suffer.

Activities to Do with Your Children on the Sabbath

1. Pray – Make 3 prayer lists. One of things to pray for yourself, one of things to pray for others, and one of people you want to give their lives to Jesus.

2. Fast – Choose 1 meal to skip and give the money to those who are in need. This is one of the hardest things for children to do, but the impact is greater.

3. Sing – It keeps the house joyful and pleases the Lord. Psalm 9:2, “I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.” Some of my favorite songs are here and we also LOVE Songs for Saplings.

4. Read – Of course your Bible would be a good pick, but also anything that glorifies Him.

5. Watch – A Bible Movie after reading are great to help kids remember the lesson and we highly recommend watching a movie about Eric Liddle (aff. link), who wouldn’t run in the Olympics on the Sabbath.

You’ve probably studied the complexities of man, how everything in our bodies work together to help us function at our best. Animals demonstrate the same thing and many have unique features that could never evolve in slow succession because the animal would die.

Take the giraffe for example. Many people believe that the giraffe’s neck slowly became longer over time so it could reach leaves on the tops of trees. However, a giraffe has many different things in it’s body that would have had to evolve at the same time with exactly the right functions. If not, the pressure from the blood rushing to it’s head when it bent over would cause brain damage!

For day 6 we read a lot about the amazing animals God made and how our bodies work. We did a lion craft, jungle scene, and talked about what makes each person unique with a little silhouette activity.

Creation Craft

For our copy-work printables, we did a super simple craft. First we talked about some amazing features of Lions. Then, the kids drew lines with different shades of orange and yellow for the lion’s mane. Then I printed out some lion heads on yellow paper (they could have been bear heads. I don’t remember). Here is a template for a lion head if you need something like it. Just click the green ‘download template’ button.

The older kids also did a project when the little ones were taking a nap. We made some Jungle Dioramas out of tissue boxes.

It was a little difficult to cut the box, but they didn’t give up. Well, I wouldn’t let them

Then they used construction paper, stencils and an animal drawing book to make a jungle scene. I showed them how they could cut slits in the top of the box and hang vines down to give it a 3D look.

A great book to go with this project would be the Shine-a-light Rain Forest book from my Usborne store.

Watch Amazing Animals

This video is great to show children in little bits. It might be too long for younger children, but we LOVED it! Even I learned a TON about God’s amazing animals and how hard it is to imagine them being randomly formed.

Who Am I? Silhouettes

We did another activity about ourselves; to show our unique traits and also similarities.

First I had the children take turns standing by a wall facing to the left. I had another child shine a light at their face and I traced the silhouette on a piece of paper on the wall.

Then I asked the children things that they liked, about themselves and just in general. We talked about how every person in the whole world is unique. Millions and millions of individuals, not one exactly the same as the other. It really is amazing to think about!

We ended every activity with a prayer to thank God for all that He has made. For making it so beautiful, complex, and interested so that we would know that He is God. We prayed for help with remembering how special every person is so we can be nicer, more generous, and think about how others feel more often.

Finally, our earth starts looking inhabitable! God gives us food through plants on the third day. He made trees “bearing-fruit with seed in it”. So we know the answer to the age-old question, Which came first, the seed or the tree?

Our craft for the 3rd day was making leaf prints on our Copy-Work printables and putting together a beautiful collage to visualize all that God made on Day 3. Plus we did an easy experiment to show how plants get nutrients and water from the soil.

This is a craft you can customize for all ages. For the little ones, I like to cut out some of the shapes ahead of time. I let the older kids cut everything for themselves.

Creation Craft

This was my favorite craft that we did through our whole creation project. It just turned out so good even with the toddlers in my class.

To make the collage, we used natural colors of scrapbook paper, craft scissors, glue and sticker paper. I tried to choose colors that matched what everything looks like in real life. I guided the children on how to make the background and then the foreground with the trees and ‘sea’.

I had ages 2-5 doing this craft, but even older children will enjoy it. We talked about each thing that was made and how it benefits the earth and all the living creatures in it. The seas, the land, the plants; everything works together to support life. God was preparing a perfect place for man to live.

How Plants Get Nutrients Experiment

This experiment combines all three elements that God made into one. It shows how plants get what they need from the water in the soil. To do this experiment I bought some white carnations from the grocery store. I cut the ends at a diagonal and put them in water that had different colors of food coloring in it.

It took a little while to get them to really change color. I also added some of the plant food that came with the flowers to see if that helped them absorb the color more and the kids recorded what they found on their Experiment Observation Worksheet.

The kids were amazed and could see that what is in the water or soil is sucked up into the plant.

Photosynthesis Video

We also watched this video to show how plants turn light into food.

I finished both of our activities by thanking God for making everything we need for food and to help us take better care of ourselves by eating more fruits and vegetables.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” Psalm 19:1

We don’t for sure what the sky was like in the days of creation. Scientists speculate that the atmosphere was a lot thicker because of what it says in Genesis 1:6-8 about there being water above the expanse called sky.

Even so, I wanted to teach my children about what the sky is and why, today, the sky is blue.

Creation Craft

First, we made a rainbow because part of the reason the sky is blue is because of light. Light has a combination of all the colors of the rainbow. You can also explain a little bit about the different layers of our sky with this craft too. I really like how it combines aspects from our Day 1 of the creation story.

We used Q-tips to paint our rainbow. It really helps cut down on mess and is easy to clean up. I had the children put another piece of paper over their copy-work sheet and start painting with one color at a time. We moved the paper down to reveal a clean spot on our sheet and added another color until our paper was filled with the colors of the rainbow. Yes I forgot green, but stuff happens

Why is the Sky Blue Experiment

Then I explained what happens to all those colors when the light hits the sky with an experiment. We used my science experiment printable that you can find here to record our findings.

We used milk to represent the gas and particles that are kept in our sky because of the atmosphere. I explained that if we didn’t have an atmosphere, the sky wouldn’t be blue. It would be black. Just like you see pictures taken on the moon, even with the sun shining.

We dimmed the room so the light from outside wouldn’t shine on our water. First, we shined the light on the water without adding any milk to see what it looked like. Then, we added a very small amount of milk to the water and shined a light on it. We tried looking at it from all different angles. When you looked at it from the side with the light shining to the right or the left, you could really see the blue tint.

When you looked right at the light, you could see a little blue tint above the light, but also some yellow and orange. You can learn more about this experiment here.

Watch a Video about the Atmosphere

This is a great video that we watched about the different layers of the atmosphere. It is truly amazing how complex the atmosphere is.

To end our lessons, I gave praise to God for making the sky and providing everything that we need to breathe and stay safe. I prayed for God to help us understand and remember the science behind His amazing creation so we can glorify Him.

I don’t know what is more amazing; the fact that God created light, or light itself. Even though scientists know how light behaves, they don’t really know why.

For day 1 in our Creation Story Book, we started with our memory verse, Genesis 1:1. We did 2 very basic art projects and our copy-work.

First, we drew the earth on our printable and then we did a simple crayon resist painting.

God Made Light Creation Craft

Crayon resist is perfect for the first day of creation. The effect illustrates exactly what it says in the Bible, Genesis 1:3-5. I especially like to emphasize to my kids HOW God made light; through His word. God’s word is THAT powerful!

We started with a blank white piece of paper and used white, yellow, and orange crayons to draw a burst of light in the middle of the pages. Then I reminded them about how God separated the light from the darkness and we used black watercolor to paint over the crayon.

The crayon (the light) shows up bright against the paint (darkness).

Making Light Experiment

Later on, we did some experiments with light to try and explain what it is. We watched this little video on light first.

In simple terms, light is energy. We tried to make a light a few different ways. First, we tried making it with sugar cubes. It was really hard and we ended up having to go in a closet. One of the dads in our homeschool co-op rolled the sugar cubes with a rolling pin really vigorously and saved the experiment. It worked! The friction created when the sugar cubes hit each other created little sparks of light.

Then we tried it with a balloon and a fleece blanket. That worked too! The science behind that is a little more complicated, but your older children will love learning about how electrons are attracted to the blanket and then jump from the blanket to the balloon and create a lightning effect!

Finally we used glow sticks to make some really bright light. Make sure you show the children how the sticks don’t glow until you break the glass inside. Then, the gas and chemicals combine and start releasing energy. Then they start to glow.

Use this science experiment printable to record your findings and talk about how amazing the light that God made is!

Just like the light is energy and helps guide us through the dark, God’s word does the same thing for us in life. So, after each of our activities we took time to pray and ask God to help us remember to listen to His word so that we won’t live in darkness and stumble through life, but live in peace and be energized by the hope His words bring to us.

Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.”
John 8:12, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.””

My kids love the creation story. While it seems so simple, it holds the answers to one of life’s most important questions; where did we come from?

I don’t just want my kids to KNOW the story, I want them to BELIEVE. I’ve started by teaching them what was made on each day. Then later, I can fill in more of the details.

I’ve joined with other bloggers to bring you even more ideas! Join us for activities, crafts, experiments and more to help your children learn the Creation Story!

I’ll list each day below and continue to add resources to help you and your children create a Creation Story Book.

Creation Story Book for Kids

We made these little books in my preschool 2 years ago. The kids enjoyed every activity! We don’t do too many structured crafts unless they are learning activities. These crafts accomplish more than that! They help children learn about what God made on each day of creation, practice handwriting, and make a book that they will love to read over and over.

For this storybook, I took the children’s artwork from the days of creation and put it in sheet protectors. Then I tied the sheet protectors together with string and duck-taped the side to make a very sturdy book that is perfect for a memory box.

If you like to do your own creation unit and storybook, please see the days of creation below with ideas for activities you can do. If the activity isn’t a craft, I suggest taking a picture and gluing it onto the creation copy-work printables you find below.

Creation Copy-work and Drawing Sheet Printables

We used these printables below for some of the art that we did for our storybooks. It also helps to have some Biblical text to guide you on what to say for each day. Although, not all of these are the actual verses, but summaries of the creation story.

They are great for handwriting practice too! If your child is too young to trace it on their own, you can just guide their hand by holding their wrist. To download, click the image below and save to your computer. Please share this post when telling others about these printables and not the download itself. Thank you!

Days of Creation Activities for Kids

Check out all of these ideas below and have your child choose 1 or 2 for each day of creation! Do one activity each week or each day, it is up to you! Get ready to have lots of fun and glorify God at the same time.

Nothing challenges a child’s faith in God like the Theory of Evolution. It is not because the theory is a strong one, but because it’s often the only one presented to him. It is not enough to tell your child that creation happened, when “scientists” claimed to have proven otherwise. You must make a reasonable case for your faith, or your children will come to see your faith as a fantasy that flies in the face of facts.

Of course, that can be hard to do. You haven’t studied biology, or creationism for that matter, and your children are learning from professionals who study little else.

Luckily, you don’t have to know a whole lot to disprove evolution. The theory is so weak that its proponents have only kept it alive by pushing it on children in government schools, who lack the scientific understanding to refute it.

The Only Thing Your Kids Need to Refute Evolution

You don’t have to become an expert in DNA, adaptations, mutations, probability, fossils, or anything else. Evolution has an Achilles’ heel. Share it with your children and they will be able to stand confidently, knowing that science supports their faith. Evolution’s Achille’s heel is the Law of Biogenesis.

The fact is, evolution was DEAD on arrival. While evolutionary scientists claim that their theory is a scientific explanation for the origins of life, they haven’t the slightest clue where the original spark of life came from.

They think that they can explain how lower forms of life evolved into higher forms, but even with their wild imaginations, they haven’t come up with a scientific theory to explain what transformed non-living (inorganic) matter into living (organic) matter.

This is big deal. It should have been the starting point, because without life, evolution is dead in it tracks. But evolutionists go on believing, claiming that just because they don’t have a natural explanation of life’s origin, doesn’t mean God did it. Science, they claim, is working on a solution.

But that isn’t true.

Science has already given us the solution. It is called the Law of Biogenesis: life comes from life. Observable science has already proven that non-living material can’t spontaneously come to life.

Regardless of their claims, evolutionists actually submit to this truth all the time.

When someone they love dies, they bury them. They know that there is no need to preserve the body, because once the life force leaves, science cannot restore it. Go ahead and ask them. Forget about their primordial soup and billions of years of evolution. Give them the finished product.

Take a dead man, with all his organs and systems fully evolved, and ask the evolutionist to bring him back to life.

They can’t.

They wouldn’t know where to start, because they know that life only comes from life. Yet, they want us to believe that a few elements attached themselves together and then “poof,” in spite of all we know from science, spontaneously came to life. They can’t reproduce the act in a lab, with all their supercomputers, but they want us to believe that it just randomly happened billions of years ago in a mud puddle.

The delusions these people willingly embrace to get rid of God is astounding; some even claiming that aliens put life on earth. Think that I am joking, or that it must be a fringe opinion? Listen to Richard Dawkins, the world’s most influential evolutionist and atheist, in his own words.

Now these people aren’t stupid; in fact, they are very intelligent. The problem is that the whole universe points to God, but they decided ahead of time that they just wouldn’t go there.

So, if you teach your children nothing else to refute evolution, teach them about the Law of Biogenesis!

The nursery at my church is amazing. All thanks to Linda Mayhugh for teaching us this fun Bible lesson for our babies!

When you pass our nursery, you will rarely hear crying or fussing. Instead, you will hear the laughter and singing as our babies and toddlers learn about God! You will see chubby cheeks smiling and all eyes on the teacher as the babies eagerly wait to see what is coming next.

This class really stimulates all of their senses, building the young children’s vocabulary and giving them something to look forward to each week. In fact, the little ones that have learned how to walk will often head straight to the table for their lesson the moment they arrive. Some will even point to the table and say, “Bible Class?”

Baby Church

Well, I was so impressed by this lesson and, even more so, the excited reaction of all the nursery children that I decided to replicate the lesson for home use. I teach this bible class to my own children and my preschoolers. It is a huge hit every time and I am sure it will be for your little ones as well. Below is everything you will need to get started, including the complete lesson in a downloadable version.

First, download the class outline. I laminated mine so it can withstand abuse. This outline will show you how to do the class step by step and help you stay on track so you can transition fast and keep your little one’s attention. Click the image to download.

Next, gather the toys and objects listed in the outline. You can use things you already have around the house or put together a special bin. Here is an example and list of the things that I use:

Tips and Suggestions: Start out by doing a shortened version of the class like the one I do in the video below. Gradually start adding more detail by asking questions, or including more types of vehicles, food, and animals. For toddlers, I like to ask them what comes next once they have done the class several times. Have fun!!!
