5 Ways to Celebrate Winnie the Pooh Day

1. Read aloud stories from Winnie the Pooh

Grab your copy of Winnie the Pooh and spend the day introducing your youngest children to the adventures of a silly old bear. Learn about Rabbit, Tigger, and Piglet. Don’t forget to mention Owl, Eeyore, Kanga, and Roo.

While you read, brew up a pot of tea, and add plenty of honey of course. Add some homemade honey roasted nuts to munch and you have a treat for everyone!

2. Learn about the original black bear, Winnie

Winnie the Pooh wasn’t just imagined out of the clouds. Winnipeg, or Winnie, was a black bear who lived in the London Zoo from 1915 to her death in 1934.

Apparently Christopher Robin was a fan of hers. He even changed the name of his beloved teddy bear from Edward Bear to Winnie the Pooh, inspiring his father to tell stories of Winnie the Pooh’s adventures. 3. Illustrate your favorite scenes

Nothing is better than drawing your favorite scenes from Winnie the Pooh. Draw him hanging from balloons while trying to steal honey. Draw Tigger bouncing on Rabbit. Draw Rabbit digging up carrots in his garden.

Illustrate the scenes and hang them around the house. Take your favorite pictures and add a quote from the book. How many pictures can you and your children draw of Winnie the Pooh?

4. Draw a map of the Hundred Acre Woods

Many adventures happen in the Hundred Acre Woods for Pooh, Piglet, and Tigger. Create a map of the Hundred Acre Woods and note where the different stories take place.

While you’re at it, chat with your kids about north and south, and the compass rose. Make certain one is included on your map!

5. If you lived in the Hundred Acre Woods

Imagine with your kids would life would be like if you lived in the Hundred Acre Woods. What sort of house would you life in? Would it be a tree house, a den, or a regular house? Ask your children to draw their houses for you.

Also ask your children what types of adventures they would take with Winnie the Pooh. Encourage them to regale you with long tales of romps through the forest, bouncing with Tigger, and eating honey with Pooh. Let your older children write the stories down in a notebook for you.

Winnie the Pooh has been a favorite series for young kids for many generations. So take a day off and celebrate Winnie the Pooh Day with your kids and if you’re really ambitious, plan a unit study around Winnie the Pooh.

Together, we came up with what has been the most fun indoor rainy day activity in our home to date just so that he would get to use that sled.

We simply used stuff that we already had around the house to create a “snow hill” for the sled to race down. The result? Hours of laughter and energy-burning fun despite the pouring rain outside!

Indoor Rainy Day Activity for Kids

For our snow hill, we placed two twin mattresses on the stairs and then placed dufflebags full of clothes (my husband had just gotten home from a trip) at the bottom to keep the mattresses from sliding down and to keep the kids from smashing into the wall opposite the stairs. The kids then slid down with and without the sled!

If you don’t have mattresses to put on the stairs, you can always substitute them with something else somewhat sturdy and smooth, such as gym mats or large pieces of cardboard.

People are always giving away free mattresses on Craigslist! Then you can always pass them on to someone else if you don’t have the space to keep them. That may seem like a lot of work just for this activity, but it will be worth it. SO fun!

The kids eventually got so comfortable flying down the mattresses, that they came up with “trick moves” and didn’t even stop for water breaks…

Climbing back up the mattresses every time burns so much energy, and this activity helps develop gross motor skills as well. The kids loved racing each other to see who could get back up to the top first.

Happy, active kids make for a happy momma. I originally thought that I was going to get a ton done around the house while these shenanigans were going on, but I ended up joining in on the fun and had such a good time giggling with them.

Thus, the photo above has a couch full of clean, unfolded laundry in the background… but my kids will remember the fun they had with mom that day rather than the slightly wrinkled clothes now hanging in their closets.

I have children coming to my home preschool throughout the summer.  It is so helpful to have fun and enriching activities for them to do when they are here.  All three of these activities promote different types of skills and are perfect for all different ages!

Animal Habitat Activities

1. DIY Animal Habitat Board Game

Supplies: Construction paper, Reusable Stickers or small animal toys, Pencils, Scissors

The girls were so excited to make their own board game! I gave them a piece of construction paper and let them draw their own board game first.  Then we worked on one together.

I asked them where animals live and we added different colored paper for each place they named; in the water, in the jungle, in the field, and in the dessert.  We made our own people for place markers and drew a path through the different habitats.

The girls took turns placing our Reusable Sticker Animals on the path in their correct habitat.  We used a spinner with 1-4 from another board game and started to play!  It was fun to have everyone act like the animal that they landed on.  The first person to the end was the winner!

2.  Animal Habitat Scenes

These reusable stickers were great for free and imaginative play.  I had children from 3-7 yrs happily designing their habitat scenes for almost an hour!  There were 5 scenes in the set and more than 150 stickers!  For under $4, this makes a great busy bag activity that the children will use again and again.

3. DIY Animal Puzzles

You could use any flat toy animals, but we used our reusable stickers again to make our own puzzles!  All we did was trace the outline of the stickers on a piece of paper.  You could have your children draw a habitat scene before they traced the animals too.

I had to help the younger children trace, but they really loved trading puzzles and putting them together.  I talked about which animals on their paper lived in the same habitat.  The children loved it and wanted to make more puzzles!

Even Colton got to do his animal puzzle! The noises the puzzle makes are perfect for him because he can’t say the animals names quite yet and it motivates him to put it back together.

We had such a great time learning about animal habitats!  How do you teach your children about animals?

I got a steal of a deal on a children’s art easel at a garage sale. $15 was what a mom was asking for it and I’m not one to barter. The only problem was the marker all over the wood and the chalk board.

I don’t really care about the dry erase board because if my kids had markers in their room you know I’d find marker in the most inconvenient places. Chalk is easy to clean, so I wanted to redo the board and make it even more fun. I had a bunch of magnets that weren’t getting used so I created this Magnetic Chalkboard to put on the easel and make it even better.

The first step was to clean up the marker that was all over the wood. All I used to clean it was some baking soda and water. If your marker isn’t coming off you can try toothpaste, or Orange Glo. The baking soda worked really well for everything except that there was a little permanent marker on the old chalk board and the chalk holder that I couldn’t get off. That was fine because I just covered both of those up.

For the chalk holder, I simply glued some scrapbook paper on and covered it with clear contact paper. It turned out really well and looks super cute in the kids’ room.

DIY Magnetic Chalk Board

If you’ve researched magnetic paint, and chalk paint, they can both be quite spendy. Then I would have to do multiple coats of both and who has time to do that? So I just bought a piece of sheet metal for close to $10 and made my own chalk paint to go on it. The kids joined in to help me paint.

Then I attached the metal sheet with heavy duty spray adhesive and held it in place with a small vice for a couple of hours to let it dry. If I did this again, I would paint the metal with primer first and then the chalk paint because I had to cover it with quite a few coats.

My children spend hours drawing and adding magnets to their scenes. It was well worth the effort, seeing all of their creative masterpieces. Have you made any chalk projects lately?
